This New Zealand first 2-day course guides you through the basics of bee-friendly, natural, organic, biodynamic, small-scale beekeeping with the Warré hive. You will leave the course competent in Warré hive methods and be ready to keep your own bees, naturally.

In this workshop you’ll learn the basic theory for:

Beekeeping in New Zealand, the biology of the honeybee super organism, the importance of natural comb, siting apiaries, history of the Warré hive, getting set up, getting bees/catching swarms, honey harvesting, pests and diseases, registering your hives.

In this workshop you’ll do the practical exercises of:

Suitable timbers for building a Warré hive, waxing semi-frames, hive inspection, nadiring, hiving a swarm, wintering down, harvesting honey.

This bee-friendly method mimics the bees’ natural nest and behaviours, giving them full control of their own environment supporting them to thrive. We will teach you to observe and interact with the honeybee whole, for their benefit.

Included in the cost of the course is David Heaf’s book Natural Beekeeping with the Warré Hive: A Manual, as well as references to other books and resources with further reading.

Meals Included

At Koanga they are very aware of how important food is to eco-systems, people, cultures, communities and ultimately our health.

All food served on the course is:

Camping Facilities Included

We have set this workshop up so you are able to camp onsite and use our facilities. You’re also welcome to stay somewhere in Wairoa at your own cost, if you prefer. If you are coming from far away and wish to arrive the night before and leave the day after the workshop you will need to let us know. Usually people arrange their own food and their own cooking facilities during this time. If you wish to join our meals outside of what the course provides these will cost $10 per meal and once again you will need to let us know in advance by contacting contact@koanga.org.nz
